Dr. Karen Mosojane, a medical doctor with further training in dermatology credits her patience and friendliness as qualities that bring her closer to her patients.
She recalls first falling in love with dermatology when a patient presented with a round, circumscribed, lichenified plaque on the lower abdomen, caused by a nickel allergy from his belt. It was during an examination in her second year of medical school.
What struck her most was how beautifully localised the lesion was. Dr. Mosojane was fascinated by the fact that, just by observing a rash, she could make a diagnosis without needing further tests. From that moment, she never looked at any other medical specialty in the same way.
Dr. Mosojane states that she has over 10 years of experience in dermatology and is a member of internationally recognised organisations such as the South African Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the International Society of Pediatric Dermatology, and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. Through her affiliations, she has access to recent journal articles, continued medical education, and regular conferences, ensuring she stays updated on the latest developments in the field of medicine.
Dr. Mosojane completed her residency at the University of Witwatersrand and has treated patients in a volunteer capacity at Princess Marina Hospital. She has also been involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Botswana.
She enjoys dermatology because it allows her to see beyond skin or hair ailments; she is also attuned to the mental effects that some conditions have on her clients. She says she listens to her patients’ concerns, while others may dismiss them as merely cosmetic issues. Dr. Mosojane is aware of how to manage systemic complications that may arise from conditions that appear to be limited to the skin.
Furthermore, Dr. Mosojane outlines her expertise in various aspects of the medical field, including full-body skin examinations, which dermatologists are specifically trained to perform. She notes that dermatologists can often assess a patient using their naked eye, eliminating the need for further imaging depending on the nature of the concern.
She also works with children and employs techniques that focus on friendliness and comfort to ease their treatment experiences.
Her practice is located at the Riverwalk Medical Center as well as Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, and she is also affiliated with Riverside Private Hospital in Francistown. Dr. Mosojane describes her demeanor with patients as patient, warm, friendly, empathetic, and a good listener.
