JJK BW, the sports and fitness apparel designer and retailer of entrepreneur Jomo John Kgaolo, is quickly gaining ground in the fitness arena since being launched on 18 December 2020.
The idea for making fitness clothes came to Kgaolo, a self-proclaimed fitness junkie who used to struggle to find “nice affordable gym pieces”. This challenge presented an opportunity for him to venture into entrepreneurship, fulfilling a life-long dream of participating in the glamorous world of fashion that was ignited through watching the iconic soap opera, “The Bold & the Beautiful,” that is based on a prosperous family at the helm of the fashion industry.
Despite the world being in the grips of a pandemic, Kgaolo says business has been good as people took to his designs. The pieces can be found at all Jack’s Gym outlets and Muscle and Fitness at Railpark Mall in Gaborone, as well as at Eagle Wellness Centre in Palapye.
“My dream is for JJK to be a household brand. I am quite impressed with the uptake this far and it’s only been a month,” Kgaolo says.
He attributes his speedy progress to social media, which he believes plays a huge role in getting the brand to people, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic that mandates social distancing.
Some of the challenges he faced prior to launching his fitness line included having to wait for a long time to get samples of the items from Pakistan where they are made. JJK is wholly designed in Botswana. Another challenge is the delay caused by national lockdowns that have slowed progress.
“I would have launched JJK earlier but couldn’t because of the closing of borders and trading,” he states, adding that the pandemic presents a challenge for the visibility of his brand at gyms where gymnasts worry about contracting the virus.Kgaolo, who is into pageantry, is Mr Gaborone 2018 and was placed 6th at the Mr Africa 2018 pageant that was held in Lagos, Nigeria in the same year. Some of his other achievements include a gold medal in the Heart of Africa segment and Top 5 Top model in the same contest.
Future plans for JJK include expanding to everyday corporate wear, a scent line and a shoe line. JJK currently makes vests, gloves, sweatpants, shorts, fitness leggings and leisure suits.
