      Close to a billion spent on food imports in June

      Exactly P839.1 million was spent on food imports alone in the month of June 2021, figures from the government’s data collecting agency, Statistics Botswana, have revealed. The imports represented 11 percent of the total import bill.

      • Food bill was 11.0% of total imports
      • Cereals led food imports at 17.6%

      The most imported food item was cereals at 17.6 percent translating into P147.8 million with Maize (corn) leading the numbers at 39.2 percent followed by Wheat & Muslin, Durum Wheat, at 18.9 percent.

      The second most imported food category was Beverages with Beer Made from Malt at 35.5 percent and Beverages, Spirits & Vinegar, followed by Beverages, Fermented (e.g.) Cider, Perry, Mead, Sake) at 26.4 percent. Beverages had a total import amount of P109 million representing 13. 1 percent of the food bill.

      Coming closely behind was Sugars and Sugar Confectionery that cost P 95.6 million representing 11.4 percent of the total food bill for the month of June.

      For June 2021, Botswana’s total imports were valued at P7.6 billion compared to May 2021 when Botswana’s total imports were valued at P7.4 billion. In this amount, food imports cost P823.8 million translating into 11.1 percent. Beverages, Spirits & Vinegar accounted for 20.3 percent of food Imports, followed by Cereals and Preparations of Cereals, Flour, Starch or Milk; Pastry Cooks’ Products at 14.7 percent and 7.6 percent respectively.
