For Botswana’s celebrated make-up artist known simply as “The Guru,” beauty has always been more than just a profession — it’s an art form.
“My journey into the make-up world was a gradual one,” he recalls.
“As a high school student, I was always drawn to artistry and taking care of my appearance. That passion for aesthetics naturally led me to the beauty industry, where I began as a lash technician.”
It wasn’t long before make-up stole his heart. At the time, professional make-up artists were rare in Botswana, and he saw an opportunity to fill that gap with skill, passion and dedication.
His big break came when he became senior make-up artist for the SABC2 soapie Soul City, followed by work on the TV adaptation of Botswana’s beloved radio drama series Makgabaneng. His talent quickly earned him the affectionate nickname “Guru” from friends and clients, a title that would eventually become his brand identity.
“When it came time to register my company, ‘The Guru’ felt like the perfect fit,” he says. “The name resonated with my clients and was well-received by everyone. It just felt natural.”
His career has since taken her far beyond local sets and bridal suites. He was among 200 influential women from 37 countries invited to the Forbes 30/50 Women’s Summit in Abu Dhabi, where he met beauty mogul Huda Kattan. “Meeting her was surreal,” he says. “We talked about defining success, diversity, and inclusion in the African beauty industry. To be in that room as a young entrepreneur from Botswana was unforgettable.”
Whether it’s bridal, editorial, production, or commercial work, Guru approaches each assignment as a fresh creative challenge. “What sets them apart is the script and creative direction,” he explains. “That’s where my skills are really put to the test to deliver what the client envisions.”
As a bridal artist, he understands the importance of his role on a wedding day. “I’m the first person the bride sees. I set the tone for what’s to come,” he says. “Punctuality is non-negotiable, and I take the time to understand each bride’s style rather than imposing my own. It’s about making them feel confident and beautiful.”
His approach shifts depending on the setting. “For TV, make-up tends to be more layered and dramatic to translate well on camera,” he says. “Day wear is about a natural, radiant look that lets the skin breathe. For everyday make-up, a little product goes a long way — subtlety is key.”
His signature “It Girl” look is a blend of clean elegance and soft glamour: hybrid lashes, satin lips, subtle bronzer, and a hint of highlighter. He is also passionate about hybrid make-up that combines beauty with skincare benefits for a glowing complexion and minimal coverage.
Whether he’s creating a flawless bridal look, perfecting a corporate style, or crafting editorial drama, The Guru remains committed to one principle: enhancing natural beauty while empowering clients to feel their most confident.
