Botswana Railways (BR) has abruptly terminated a P30 million contract with businessman Shadrack Baaitse, citing fears it would unlawfully hand over control of the country’s rail infrastructure to a private operator.
In a strongly worded letter to Baaitse, Managing Director of Life Compass, BR Acting General Manager Baboloki Phuthego said the deal violated Section 13(1) of the Botswana Railways Act, which grants the parastatal exclusive authority to own, control, and manage all railway infrastructure and systems nationwide.
