Weakness in the global diamond market, coupled with rising demand for copper and other energy-transition metals, is prompting junior miner Botswana Diamonds Plc (BOD) to shift its exploration strategy. The company is now prioritising copper for near-term growth while keeping diamonds as a longer-term option.
BOD has been awarded eight copper-focused prospecting licences covering roughly 7,000 square kilometres in north-western Botswana, marking a major strategic expansion for a firm historically associated with diamond exploration. The licences are in the Damaran Belt, a geological zone known for copper, zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, and lie close to established base-metal mining trends.
