Botswana’s unemployment rate, among the highest in Africa, is projected to rise sharply as the economy contracts year-on-year, according to a recent report by the central bank.
Statistics Botswana’s Quarterly Multi-Topic Survey (QMTS) for the first quarter of 2024 shows unemployment rose to 27.6 percent, up from 25.9 percent in the third quarter of 2023. The Bank of Botswana (BoB) attributes the rise to a weakening labour market linked to a slowing diamond mining sector. Youth unemployment rose to 38.2 percent from 34.4 percent over the same period.
