Betting companies are becoming an increasingly important source of financing for Botswana football, with PstBet Botswana the latest operator to commit significant money to the domestic game.

PstBet on Wednesday announced a P2 million sponsorship of TAFIC Football Club over three seasons, adding the Francistown giants to a growing list of clubs receiving financial backing from betting companies.

The deal is significant for TAFIC, but also points to a wider shift in the economics of Botswana football, where betting companies are increasingly using clubs as platforms for brand visibility and community engagement while providing teams with much-needed commercial income.

PstBet CEO Advocate Mokoko Gaboutloeloe said the agreement was not simply about buying advertising space, but about creating value for both parties.

“We believe that sponsorship is not simply the purchase of advertising space; it is a symbiotic partnership,” Gaboutloeloe said.

He drew a parallel between the partnership and TAFIC’s philosophy, “U ndipe, ndikupe” — give me, and I give you back.

“Ndipe ndi kupe,” Gaboutloeloe said. “That is the Matjimenyenga philosophy of play.”

He said the philosophy was also aligned with PstBet’s “#youplay, we pay” proposition.

TAFIC, founded in 1959, has a long-standing identity in Francistown and a supporter base built over generations.

Gaboutloeloe said the company was conscious of the club’s history and wanted to contribute to its next chapter.

“We come respectfully to add our chapter to it,” he said.

He said the ambition was to help create a TAFIC that was competitive on the field, professionally administered, commercially sustainable and capable of carrying the Francistown name across Botswana and beyond.

TAFIC chairman Mogomotsi Thomas said the three-year agreement came at an important time for the club as it prepared for a demanding period of football in the Botswana Football League.

“This partnership could not have come at a more perfect time,” Thomas said.

He said the sponsorship would help strengthen the club and improve its competitiveness as it pursued its ambitions.

“We want the two brands to become synonymous with each other,” Thomas said.

BETTING FIRMS DEEPEN FOOTBALL INVESTMENT

The PstBet agreement comes as betting companies increase their financial involvement in Botswana football.

Sunbet has committed P4 million to Gaborone United over two seasons, while the company says its investment in Gaborone United and Township Rollers over the past two years has exceeded P6.5 million.

Sunbet has also committed P1 million towards health through sport through its partnership with Fearless Fitness Botswana and its 10K Run series.

Bet267 has meanwhile signed a P2 million, two-season sponsorship agreement with Township Rollers, equivalent to P1 million per season.

The company has also expanded its sponsorship activity beyond the traditional giants, committing P400,000 per season to Tonota FC over two seasons, taking the agreement to P800,000.

PstBet’s P2 million commitment to TAFIC adds another substantial investment to the football sponsorship market.

The growing presence of betting companies reflects the commercial appeal of football, which provides brands with regular audiences, established community loyalties and national visibility.

For clubs, the sponsorships provide a source of income at a time when many teams continue to face financial pressures and are seeking ways to become more commercially sustainable.

Sponsorship alone cannot resolve the structural challenges facing Botswana football, but additional commercial revenue can give clubs greater capacity to operate, invest in their teams, market themselves and improve their competitiveness.

TURNING MONEY INTO SUSTAINABILITY

For TAFIC, the immediate challenge will be to translate the P2 million commitment into lasting improvements that extend beyond the three-year sponsorship period.

Thomas said the partnership presented an opportunity to strengthen the club while pursuing its ambitions both on and off the field.

For PstBet, the return on the investment will depend on whether the partnership generates sustained brand visibility and meaningful engagement with TAFIC supporters and the wider Francistown community.

Gaboutloeloe said investment in sport could contribute to a broader economic ecosystem by creating jobs, stimulating economic activity and diversifying incomes.

“We are immensely happy to be strategically positioned to assist Government deliver on this mandate,” he said.

The increasing competition among betting companies for football sponsorships also means clubs have greater leverage to attract commercial partners.

The competition is therefore no longer confined to the football pitch. It is increasingly being played out in sponsorship negotiations, brand positioning and the battle for supporters’ attention.

For Botswana football, the opportunity is to ensure that growing sponsorship income translates into stronger clubs, better administration and more sustainable sporting institutions.

Thomas summed up the partnership:

“PstBet brings premier sports trading. TAFIC FC brings premier football. Together, we have an opportunity to create something special.”

For TAFIC, the next three seasons will determine whether the partnership becomes simply another sponsorship agreement — or a foundation for a more commercially sustainable club.
