Xugana Island Lodge comes to life: A Legacy Reimagined

“Chobe keeps expanding and is committed to uplifting and contributing to the Botswana economy,” stated MCOdumetse, Group Managing Director of Chobe Holdings, in reference to the reopening of Xugana Island Lodge.

“Xugana Island Lodge, a landmark in the Okavango Delta, boasts a history dating back to the 70’s, initially established as a hunting camp by Harry Selby before its transformation into a photographic lodge in the 1970s.  This redesign is a testament to its iconic status and the rich heritage of the Okavango Delta’s people.”

The lodge, a subsidiary of Chobe Holdings Ltd under Desert & Delta Safaris, reopened on 15 April 2025 after a full rebuild and reimagining, following its closure in October 2024. The new design merges modern traveller expectations with the enduring beauty of the Okavango Delta.

Desert & Delta Safaris, which has operated the lodge since 1999, has expanded its footprint in the region through a series of major projects. The Xugana Island Lodge rebuild follows recent renovations at Savute Safari Lodge and Nxamaseri Island Lodge, as well as a new partnership with Savanna Expeditions for the 2026 redevelopment and opening of Sediba Sa Rona, formerly Khwai River Lodge.

The revitalized Xugana Island Lodge now offers 12 rooms, up from eight, and is expected to boost Botswana’s economy through increased tourism revenue and job creation. Desert & Delta Safaris employs 482 staff, 97 percent of whom are Botswana citizens.
