BTC hit with Fresh Complaints by Ex-Employees

Say BTC stinted them in exit packages Mediation effort by District Labour Office postponed Two-hundred former employees of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) have again accused the telco of various labour violations, among them failure to consult in good faith, unilateral implementation of restructuring and failure to disclose information to facilitate meaningful consultation. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="3" ] This emerges in a letter from the District Labour Office notifying BTC management of a mediation hearing scheduled for 17 January 2023 (Tuesday this week). The Business Weekly & Review is in possession of a copy of the letter in which BTC is cited as the Respondent while the Botswana Telecommunications Employee Union (BOTEU) is cited as Applicant. “This serves to acknowledge to all parties that a referral letter was served to the respondent,” says the letter. “Mediation hearing is scheduled for 17 January 2023 at Gaborone Labour Office.” But the case was postponed to 26 January 2023 when BTC management claimed to be insecure and that some of the former employees had yelled at them, according to BOTEU president Kewetse Busumane. “They were then escorted at out of the Labour premises by the police but requested that the venue for the hearing be changed,” he said. The employees said that they want a dignified exit from the company they have served for years. As before, they accused management of failing to meet with BOTEU during the retrenchment exercise despite attempts by the union to that end. “The consultative process was never done in good faith as ordered by the courts,” the employees said in a document seen by this publication in which they also raise their exit package as a grievance. “(It) is so inadequate that the company has offered only 18 days capped at 15 years, which means by calculation if your basic salary is P20 000 you divide that by 18 for 18 days then multiply the answer by 15 for 15 years which will give you a total before tax”, says the document. “Note that if you have worked 25 years 10 is cut off you have worked 20 years 5 is cut off if you have worked 30 years 15 years is cut off. “BTC only paid exiting employees seven days salary and notified them to leave the corporation within 8 days from receiving the letter to exit which was from the 1 st to the 9 th of December 2022.” On 5 December last year, the Human Resources Manager at BTC, Mmamotse Wilkinson, informed the employees in the exiting pool by letter that “a decision has been made to grant you garden leave with immediate effect (5 th December 2022) in line clause 2.3.14 of the leave policy”. “You will be paid basic salary and benefits up to and including the 9 th December 2022,” Wilkinson wrote.
