‘Clubs have a Role to Play in Helping BFL attract Sponsors’- Rollers CEO

Clubs in Botswana Football League (BFL) have a role to play in helping the league to attract sponsors, the CEO of Township Rollers, Bennett Mamelodi, has said. “We are products of BFL and they sell us as a commodity,” Mamelodi told The Business Weekly Sports in a telephone interview. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] “We have to be attractive and to make sure that we play competitive football that will entice supporters to come to stadiums and make BFL a sellable commodity. We have to make it for BFL to sell the league.” Now into its third week, Botswana premier league is currently running sans a sponsor after the Debswana sponsorship ended with the last season. Negotiations with the giant mining parastatal for a renewal of the sponsorship are still underway. Mamelodi added that Rollers will try their best to make BFL attractive. “We have an obligation to BFL and Botswana Football Association to honour fixtures regardless of whether the league has sponsors or not, and we will keep on doing so,” he said. “At the same time, we believe that BFL is doing its best to secure sponsors and are hopeful that something will come up soon.” Meanwhile, “Popa Popa,” as Township Rollers are called by their legions of supporters have beefed up their squad for the 2022/23 season because they want to compete for all honours available in local football. “We want to be competitive,” Mamelodi said. “Rollers is by nature a brand whose supporters and football fanatics in general expect to challenge for everything and push other teams to the limit. That is why we decided to beef up our squad.” This is the club that released more than 10 players ahead of the 2022/23 season and signed 11 players, among them former Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) attacker Mogakolodi “Tsotso” Ngele. Asked about the cost of running a top tier football club, Mamelodi responded: “We spend a lot of money at Rollers. We have many overheads, some of which are salary payments, travel and accommodation costs, and players’ rentals. “We devised some cost-cutting measures prior to the season but were careful that it has not come at the expense of our players and staff. But we are still spending a lot inspite of the cost-cutting measures. That is why we have to be competitive so that we attract sponsors and entice supporters to come to stadiums to defray those costs.” Township Rollers are regarded as one of the best football clubs to ever come out of the country.
