Botswana has secured significant institutional and private sector backing for the 2026 Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games, as preparations intensify for one of the region’s largest student sporting events set to take place in Gaborone.

The sponsorship commitments and logistical arrangements mark a key milestone in the build-up to the Games, which are expected to attract more than 1,000 athletes from nine countries between June 28 and July 5, 2026, reinforcing Botswana’s growing profile as a host of international sporting events.

The CUCSA Local Organising Committee (LOC) announced the support package this week alongside updates on accommodation, venues and event programming, saying planning is now at an advanced stage.

CUCSA LOC Chairperson Outule Bale said key infrastructure and operational systems were already in place, with competition venues and accommodation secured across Gaborone and surrounding areas.

University of Botswana residences will serve as the official Athletes’ Village, while Oasis Motel, Royal Aria Hotel and Woodlane Hotel have been designated for officials. Organisers said the arrangement was designed to ensure coordinated accommodation and smooth logistics throughout the Games period.

Beyond competition, the programme will include an opening ceremony, student engagement seminars and a Cultural Day aimed at promoting regional unity, cultural exchange and youth development.

Botswana National Olympic Committee president Tshepo Sitale welcomed the sponsorship support, saying it reflects growing recognition of the importance of student sport in long-term national development and regional integration.

He said Botswana had another opportunity to strengthen its reputation as a reliable host of international sporting events.

The sponsorship structure includes contributions from public and private institutions across multiple tiers.

In the Silver category, the Botswana National Sports Commission has pledged P500,000, the Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association has contributed P250,000, and Botswana Insurance Holdings Limited has provided P100,000.

Organisers said these funds would support core event operations, athlete services, logistics and infrastructure requirements to ensure smooth delivery of the Games.

Additional support has been confirmed in the Bronze and partnership category, including Moghul Catering as Official Catering Partner, Oasis Motel as Hospitality Partner and Royal Aria Hotel as an accommodation partner. Other contributors include Tlokweng College of Education, MedReflex, University of Botswana and Woodlane Hotel, which will support logistics, medical services and venue operations.

Officials said the Games are expected to generate economic activity across hospitality, transport and small business sectors, while also strengthening Botswana’s position as a regional destination for student and youth sporting events.

They added that the CUCSA Games are designed not only as a sporting competition but also as a platform for cultural exchange, leadership development and regional cooperation among Southern African universities.
