Engen Powers Squash Tourney

Downstream petroleum company Engen Botswana has joined hands with squash club Alpha Squash Academy (ASC) to sponsor their monthly tournaments, this publication can reveal. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] ASC is a Gaborone-based squash club that is bestowed with the responsibility of organising a monthly tournament titled the Engen Junior Squash Series- a 12-month squash program. Finals of the tournament are played every three months (quarterly) with the next one billed for the 27 th of this month. ASC organizes the tournament with the support of Botswana Squash Rackets Association. “Engen are title sponsors of this tournament and it is difficult to state how much they are sponsoring us with,” said ASC Director Koketso Ntshebe in an interview with The Business Weekly Sport . “This is so because they provide (sponsoring in kind) us with things we need meaning that we have no costs.” Ntshebe noted that they are (ASC) waiting to be enrolled in Engen Corporate Social Responsibility Programs (CSRPs). He continued to tell this publication that they have other partners for their tournament which among others include Super5s, Powergate, Newtech Farming, Squash Café, Energise Physio and the University of Botswana high performance center. “And we are grateful of them as they are making us reach our dreams,” he said. Going back to the tournament, Ntshebe highlighted that it is meant for players under the age of 19 with different categories like U11, U13, U15 and so on. “This tournament is meant for developmental purposes,” he said. “We are providing a learning platform to produce potential national team athletes. We also seek to build rivalries and capacity through this tournament at the same time readying these young athletes for international competitions.” Nevertheless, Ntshebe noted that it is their belief that sport should not always be viewed as competition but rather as a tool that brings people from different backgrounds together. “And this is what we always preach to these young athletes,” he noted. “Through this tournament we want these young athletes to improve their confidence, socialize, work on their self-images and learn discipline.” ABOUT SQUASH Squash is a racquet sport played by two players (or four players for doubles) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. Once the ball is served, players take turns hitting the ball against the front wall, above the tin and below the out line. The ball may strike the side or back walls at any time, as long as it hits below the outline and above the tin. The ball may only bounce once on the floor, and players may move anywhere around the court. [/ihc-hide-content]
