Collective philanthropic initiatives are a valuable means of leveraging social networks and shared interests towards tangible change. Agora Club Botswana has stepped up to take on an institutional and systemic problem facing people’s pregnancies and birthing experiences across the country in their own unique way. Drawing together people of different walks of life through tapping into the universal language of artistic expression, they are inviting art lovers, connoisseurs and interior décor enthusiasts to a convening set to inspire the spirit of giving toward a noble cause. Through their Baobab Club, they are dedicating their energies to supporting renovations at Bamalete Lutheran Hospital’s Maternity Ward in Ramotswa.
The Art, Pleasure & Leisure Auction, slated for Saturday, 31 October, is an opportunity for bonding over healthy competition. The Studio at Maitisong Theatre will be transformed into a bidding arena akin to Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Beijing Poly as a selection of art and experiences are put up for acquisition. Speaking to organiser Gwen Watkins, she is quick to allay fears rooted in imposter syndrome by affirming that whether one is looking to start their collector’s journey or a seasoned investor, there is something for everyone. This diversity is fitting as Agora Club Botswana – as an affiliate of Agora Club International – is a platform where all alumni of Ladies’ Circle International circles in their 40s, alongside other Non-Past Circle friends from varied backgrounds can intersect. Represented in 24 countries around the world, Agora Club International also works together in respect with Round Table, Tangent Club International and 41 Club International through forming communities driven by effecting positive change from grassroots levels.
The auction features 22 original paintings from celebrated local artists such as Ann Gollifer – whose work ‘Mother Tongue’ is part of the British Museum’s permanent collection;2016 Barclays L’Atelier competition nominee and Goo-Tau native, Totang Motoloki; wildlife artist, Sara Glendinning;Elijah Mwanza, Shirin Ettehad, and Tlhlalefo Buka.Impressive, still is the age range of 13 to 85 represented by the artists.
For ceramic enthusiasts, sculptures from studios such as Art Discovery & Ceramics, Gabane Pottery and Terra Cotta Potteries will also stand alongsidel local art décor and vintage Chinese items. With over 50 items up for grabs, the afternoon affair is a fantastic opportunity to get more than a special piece for one’s home as the Agora ladies have also includedfine wines, a bespoke Chef’s Table experience for four with Rebel Cook, a night or a weekend away, and board games in their offerings. With the entry fee set as low as P200, missing out on joining the festivities has been made a resistible choice. Furthermore, all participating artists are donating 80% of their proceeds towards supporting the urgent repairs to the maternity ward’s bathrooms.
American cultural anthropologist and author, Margaret Mead, is quoted saying, “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”. Recognising the dire need facing Bamalete Lutheran Hospital’s Maternity Ward in enabling them to render effective and equitable service to their community of clientele, Agora Club Botswana is taking on the charge to make change more than wishful hope. The Art, Pleasure & Leisure Auction will, undoubtedly, see some people leaving with slightly emptier purses but wealth in investment.
