The Botswana Financial Institutions and Allied Workers Union (BOFIAWU) strongly condemns the manner in which Motswedi Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (Motswedi SACCOS) is handling its labour relations and the growing concerns surrounding the treatment of unionised employees.
The reported dismissal of two unionised employees, coupled with allegations of intimidation, questionable disciplinary processes and selective accountability, is deeply troubling and cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.
BOFIAWU stands firmly with its members, without compromise. The Union will not stand by while employees who exercise their legitimate rights to organise, seek representation and demand fair treatment are allegedly subjected to victimisation, intimidation or disproportionate disciplinary action.
Of particular concern are allegations surrounding a disputed financial transaction in which several officials, including the Accountant, General Manager, Operations Manager and Savings Assistant Officer, were reportedly aware of concerns before the payment was processed. Statements allegedly made during disciplinary proceedings and at Borakanelo Police Station have raised questions about who knew what, who authorised the transaction and who should ultimately be held accountable.
BOFIAWU is particularly concerned by allegations that the General Manager had informed the Board Chairperson about the payment before it was processed and that approval was reportedly given. These claims demand an independent and transparent investigation. No individual should be shielded from scrutiny because of their position, seniority or proximity to the institution’s leadership.
