Digital asset infrastructure company Xago has officially been granted a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) licence in Botswana, marking a significant milestone in the company’s strategy to expand regulated digital financial services across Africa.
The approval by the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) enables Xago to offer its compliant digital asset and cross-border payment solutions to businesses and institutions operating in Botswana.
By leveraging blockchain technology, the platform facilitates secure, low-cost and near-instant cross-border settlements, providing an efficient alternative to traditional international payment systems.
Jurgen Kuhnel, CEO and Co-Founder of Xago, said the licence represents an important step in the company’s broader vision of improving financial connectivity across the continent.
“Botswana is an exciting market with a progressive regulatory environment and a growing demand for innovative financial solutions. Receiving our VASP licence allows us to support local businesses with faster, more affordable cross-border payments while contributing to greater regional financial integration,” Kuhnel said.
Xago’s technology is designed to bridge traditional financial infrastructure with digital assets, enabling businesses to move value seamlessly across borders while maintaining regulatory compliance.
The Botswana licence forms part of Xago’s broader Southern African growth strategy, with further expansion into neighbouring markets, including Eswatini, already being explored as demand for regulated digital asset services continues to increase across the region.
As African economies become increasingly interconnected, the need for faster, transparent and more cost-effective payment infrastructure continues to grow. Xago believes regulated digital asset technology will play a key role in enabling businesses to trade more efficiently, reduce transaction costs and access global markets.
