The European Film Festival has once again come to animate screens and imaginations in Botswana. The annual affair is an extension of the global diplomacy through arts and cultural media to highlight commonalities and build an appreciation of the differences in the multiple countries that find themselves represented.
For its fifth edition – hosted collaboratively by Alliance Française of Gaborone, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Botswana and SADC, and their partners – the choice was to continue the trend of affording local filmmakers an opportunity to be seen whilst promoting European films that would otherwise be hard to access locally. With its unremarkable population and limited viewing platforms, it wouldn’t be surprising for Botswana to be assumed to not have a filmmaking corps. However, this assumption is fundamentally flawed.
