Botswana has seen a seven-fold increase in imports of solar panels from China in the 12 months to June, signalling a potential shift in the country’s energy mix away from heavy reliance on coal.
The surge, revealed in an analysis of Chinese solar panel export data by global energy think tank Ember, places Botswana among several African countries sharply increasing imports of photovoltaic (PV) modules. Analysts say the trend reflects growing interest in renewable energy as governments worldwide confront energy security concerns, climate change obligations, and the push for affordable alternatives to fossil fuels.
