The Managing Director of Debswana Diamond Company, Andrew Motsomi, says while the past year was an exceptional one for the diamond miner and producer, new challenges have emerged.
He was speaking at the company’s business seminar in Gaborone this week following his appointment in May this year as substantive Debswana MD, a position that he will hold for the next five years.
“Our business is such that our mines are very intense in terms of consumption of fuel,” said Motsomi as he began his presentation. “Trucks that haul the ore consume a lot of fuel. The tires for these trucks are now costing more than they did last year.” Motsomi noted that Debswana operates within an unpredictable global diamond market which is primarily impacted by global conflicts and market volatility. “Therefore, it is necessary to protect as well as preserve our communities and the environment,” he said.
