After An Erratic 2022, BCA Takes Stock To Restrategise For 2023

Following a hectic but disappointing 2022 sporting calendar, Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) has been taking stock and introspecting to chart a new course for vigorous activities on all fronts, the organisation’s vice chairman, Sumod Damodar, has said. This is being done while the senior women’s team is playing intra-squad practice matches every Saturday morning. According to Damodar, infrastructure development at the Cricket Ground in Lobatse and at the FSR Cricket Ground in Francistown are notable among them. “We have also employed Thatayaone Michael as development coach in Kgatleng and renewed the contracts of the men and women’s national team players effective 1 st April,” he said in an interview. “They have been playing under new contracts since last year.” Damodar disclosed that the national squads for senior men and senior women and the U-19 men/boys and women/girls have been in training. At the same time, BCA is finalising more structured events and preparing to participate in bilateral events, as well as tournaments of the Africa Cricket Association and International Cricket Council. “The senior women’s team is scheduled to participate in the ICC Africa T20 Qualifiers in September,” Damodar said. “They are currently playing intra-squad practice matches every Saturday morning.” It has also been a busy month for the men’s and the U-19 men/boys’ 50 Over intra-squad practice games which took place on the 2 nd , the 16 th and the 23 rd April. “We conducted the women’s and the U-19 women/girls’ T20 tournament from the 7 th to the 10 th April,” Damodar said. “From the 28 th to the 30 th April, we will host the BCA National Sixes at the BCA Oval comprising BCA affiliates and invitational teams.” Further, because of a “very important” ICC calendar for the women’s team ahead, BCA sent the women’s senior team on a preparatory tour to Zimbabwe, he disclosed. “Due to a hectic schedule and other prior commitments by the Tuskers, we managed to secure assistance from the Mashonaland Eagles in Harare,” Damodar said. “A touring party comprising 18 players and two officials travelled to Zimbabwe where they played six T20 matches against Mashonaland Eagles at the Old Hararians Sports Club. This happened between the 14 th and 22 nd of April.” He took the opportunity of the interview with Business Weekly Sports to thank the efforts of stakeholders to help achieve BCA’s mission of “Bringing Cricket to the Nation.” [/ihc-hide-content]
