[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] “Unfortunately, we could not send our players to the African Schools Individual Chess Championship, “It is a tournament we have dominated in the past,” said the Secretary of BCF, Mokwaledi Tingwane, in an interview. “All this boils down to funds. Our grant is too little to fund our continental events. Not only has BCF failed to send the team to the African Schools Individual Chess Championships but the federation also failed to send a team to the African Junior Championships and the Zone 4.5 Individual Chess Championship for the same reason. However, if it is any consolation, Tingwane noted that BCF managed to hold its National Championships that were sponsored by Metropolitan to the tune of P152 800. Counting their blessings for 2022, he said this year’s Metropolitan sponsorship was an improvement from P90 000 in 2020. This is the tournament that saw a teenager in Women Candidate Master (WCM) Refilwe Gabatshwarwe emerging the winner of the women’s section. “As a matter of fact, all the medalists in the women’s section are young players,” said Tingwane. “Development-wise, we are doing well in the women’s category.” BCF also ran a league sponsored by Debswana where participation of our young players was maintained. “We also sent our national teams, the men’s and the women’s, to the Olympiad held in India where we managed to bring titles of Fide Master, Candidate Master and one conditional WCM,” Tingwane pointed out. “We sent 11 athletes (six girls and five boys) to the African Youth Chess Championships from which we brought at least one medal through WCM Gabatshwarwe’s silver.” In 2022, BCF also sealed a P45 000 per year, three-year partnership with Botho University for a tournament that specifically targets brigades and tertiary institutions. “We further maintained our Botash sponsorship, the only tournament we have outside Gaborone, which is held in Sowa Town,” said Tingwane. “We are also looking to bring back sponsorships that were halted during COVID 19,” he said. Meanwhile, Tingwane said BCF could not hold its Annual General Meeting this year owing to widespread disgruntlement among members. “We tried twice but failed because we could not form a quorum,” he said. “Our constitution states that our AGM should be held before end of July every year.
