Darts Expects Only P50K from BNSC for 2023/24

BODA says sourcing funding will be a priority. Youth championships are due in third quarter of this year BODA troubled by widespread association of darts with alcohol. The Botswana Darts Association (BODA) is expecting as little as P50 000 from the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) for running its affairs for the 2023/24 financial year, The Business Weekly Sports can reveal. “BNSC has already informed National Sports Associations (NSAs) that they should expect the same amount in grants as they received in 2022,” said BODA spokesperson, Thato Maphorisa, in a telephone interview. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] “This means darts may get P50 000, which is not enough to run the affairs of our organization. We have therefore issued donation sheets to teams in order for them to raise funds from the public. That is the only way out, as things stand.” Maphorisa took the opportunity of the interview to point that the nation is yet to fully appreciate darts because the game still associates with alcohol. “But those who end up trying to play come to enjoy and play it permanently,” he said. “I can mention a few players who were in other codes professionally before but ended up switching to darts. Darts has no age limit. The youngest player in Botswana currently is 9 years old while the oldest is 88.” But what is the association doing to develop the sport? Maphorisa answered that they have youth coordinators whose task, among others, is to ensure that ensure each public school has a dartboard. “Teachers will undergo coaching clinics,” he said. “We have about 10 teachers countrywide and four schools with regular training. We plan to double or triple this effort this year. “We have also engaged people living with disabilities to learn the game and I can proudly say that they are learning so fast that we should be in a position to send a team to disability world championships.” Maphorisa noted that there is a new organization called African Darts Council (ADC) which aims to develop darts throughout the continent. “BODA has been participating only regionally (Region V),” he said. “With this new association we should be able to compete with countries outside southern Africa, which will improve the sport and help create more interest among aspiring dart players.” Meanwhile, BODA held its AGM on18 February 2023 where sourcing funding for national teams to participate in specific was discussed at great length. “This year will see the youth national team go to Regional Championships which are scheduled for around August/September in a country yet to be confirmed after the initial host, Zimbabwe, pulled out due to their national elections around that time,” Maphorisa said. “So we will soon hold trials for the Under 15 and Under 18 teams going for the championships. Like senior teams, Botswana are the title holders of the youth championships.” [/ihc-hide-content]
