Debswana’s BAA Sponsorship Plays Critical Role in Developing BW Athletics – Theetso

BAA hails Debswana for current 3-year sponsorship Hopes deal will be renewed when it expires Organisers in anticipatory mood ahead of Botswana Golden Grand Prix Mining giant Debswana Diamond Company’s sponsorship of Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) is playing a very critical role in the development of Botswana’s athletics, the vice president of BAA (responsible for) Administration, Oabona Theetso, has told The Business Weekly Sports . [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="3" ] Earlier last year, the blue chip parastatal pledged to support BAA with a P9 million sponsorship equally spread over three-years from 2022 to 2024 in tranches of P3 million per year. Speaking in a telephone interview, Theetso said the sponsorship is helping to elevate Botswana’s athletics to greater heights. “Our series of events, including our national championships, is financially supported by the sponsorship,” he noted. “We also use the sponsorship to pay for certain amenities when our athletes go to international competitions. So it is a very important sponsorship, hence we hope it will be renewed when it expires next year.” He disclosed that BAA aims to bring home at least two medals from international competitions this year. Meanwhile, organisers of the Botswana Golden Grand Prix this week announced prize money for winning participants in the event. The inaugural event - which is a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold affair - will take place on 29 April at the National Stadium in Gaborone. It is expected to attract athletes from South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria and some European countries. The event - which was formerly known as the Gaborone International Meet (GIM) - was elevated from bronze to gold status by World Athletics last year. The Botswana Golden Grand Prix is one of only two World Athletics-sanctioned continental gold tours in Africa, the other being the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya. It is organised by Golden Door Sports Agency (owned by former top athlete Glody Dube) in partnership with World Athletics, the Confederation of African Athletics, the Botswana Government, Botswana National Sports Commission, Botswana National Olympics Committee and BAA. Prize money Winners (Position 1) in the men’s 100m, the 400m and the 800m races as well as long jump will receive USD 5 000 (about P64 000) each. Winners of the 200m, the 3000m steeplechase, the 400m hurdles and shotput will receive USD 3 500 (about P45 000) each. On the women’s side, winners (Position 1) in the 100m, the 200m and the 800m races as well as long jump will receive USD 5 000 each while winners of the 400m and shotput will receive USD 3 500 each.
