Academic sportsman says “cool” is the way to go for Botswana’s fastest man This year is Letsile Tebogo’s first at senior level Botswana’s fastest man in the 100m race, Letsile Tebogo, has been advised not to panic as he transits from being a junior to a senior athlete. Celebrating his 20 th birthday this year, Tebogo is now considered a senior athlete and will now be rubbing shoulders with household names in short sprint races, among them the likes of Noah Lyles (USA) and Fredrick Kerley (USA). [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] The advice is from none other than renowned lecturer in the sports science department of the University of Botswana, Dr Tshephang Tshube, who emphasises staying focused and maintaining his cool in order to deliver good results for the athlete in his senior career. Giving a breakdown of Tebogo’s transition from junior to senior level in a telephone interview, Tshube noted that it is classified as a within-career-transition which occurs while the athlete is still active. “He is basically moving from one stage to another within his career,” he told The Business Weekly Sports . “And this within-career-transition can be classified into four domains.” The first of these domains is known as the athletic domain. “This is where he will transition in as far as athletics is concerned from junior to senior,” Dr Tshube explained. “This is primarily where his training loads are observed “What that means is that his coach has to adjust his training to accommodate his transition to senior level as the demands will be slightly high. This is because he will be regularly competing in demanding races like the Diamond League or multiple major competitions, meaning that he will have to be physically ready. He needs a stronger team to help his transition to senior level.” The second is the psychological domain, which deals with the athlete’s growth to adulthood. “Tebogo has been a teenager and is now becoming an adult,” said the academic sportsman. “He needs to understand that his character needs to change. “If his character was a bit unadmirable before, he now needs to behave like an adult and take on some responsibilities that come with being a role model to younger athletes. This is so important that his coach and people around him ought to guide him along.” Dr Tshube identified the academic domain as the third that for Botswana’s 100m record holder (men) should take seriously. “He has been at Senior Secondary School and ideally has to transition to a college or university,” he said. “It is important for that to happen as it is key to his holistic development. Dr Tshube listed psycho-social development as the fourth domain and went on to explain it as referring to people around the eminent athlete and how Tebogo relates to them. For example,”” he said, the athlete related with teachers and schoolmates when in senior secondary school but will now be in the company of top level athletes and other different characters, which may make or break his career.” Meanwhile, Tebogo is arguably the best 100m athlete to ever come out of Botswana. He smashed his own Under 20 100m record three times last year. The Kanye-born athlete lowered his record to 9.91 on his way to winning gold at the 2022 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia in August 2022. Tebogo had improved the U-20 world record to 9.94 in the heats of the senior World Championships which were staged in Eugene (USA) in July 2022 after setting the mark at 9.96 on 30 April 2022 at the Gaborone International Meet. The 19-year-old athlete rose to stardom at the 2021 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya after he became the first athlete from Botswana to win gold in the 100m on a global stage. He also picked up a silver in the 200m. It is yet to be seen if he will continue shining and ultimately win the country’s maiden medals in the 100m or the 200m at the Olympics and World Athletics Championships. [/ihc-hide-content]
