Maun Sports Complex gears up for the electrifying ‘Rumble in Okavango’ boxing extravaganza on March 30, 2024, with the legendary Mike Tyson in attendance, promising an unforgettable spectacle.

Supported by the Okavango Consortium in collaboration with influential organisations such as the Botswana Tourism Organisation, African Tourism Board, VSP Promotions, Professional Boxing Association of Botswana, and The Perfect Punch, this event signifies a significant showcase of emerging boxing talent and passion within the global south.

“Tyson feels extremely passionate about the sport and jumped at the opportunity to witness the rise of professional boxing in the global south,” said a representative from the Okavango Consortium.

Boxers hailing from diverse corners of the globe, such as Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, the Philippines, China, India, and Vietnam, are poised to compete for supremacy in the ring. The highlight of the event will be a showdown between Botswana’s own Moabi Ngaka and Mark John Yap from the Philippines, promising a spectacle of skill and determination.

In explaining the selection of Maun as the event’s venue, the representative emphasized its potential as a premier location for international events.

“Maun, and Botswana at large, represent a treasure trove of untapped potential for hosting international events of any variety,” the representative said.

“We’re demonstrating our capability to organize fight nights to international standards, all while situated in a breathtaking locale.”

Furthermore, the representative highlighted that the event is positioned to enhance sports tourism and drive economic growth in Maun, anticipating a notable increase in visitor numbers. They emphasised that Maun vendors and business owners are poised to experience a substantial surge in sales, consolidating Maun’s reputation as a hub for prestigious events.
In line with their dedication to the local community, the Okavango Consortium intends to leverage Maun’s resources and involve local businesses in ensuring the success of the event. Furthermore, a gala dinner is scheduled for sponsors and officials, presenting a valuable opportunity for international networking.

Tyson’s presence at the event adds an extra layer of excitement, as the former American professional boxer remains an iconic figure in the sport. Renowned for his ferocious style and undisputed reign as the world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, Tyson’s attendance is sure to elevate the event’s prestige and global appeal.

The Okavango Consortium collaborates with local leaders like Kgosi Mogalakwe and Kgosi Tawana of Maun, aiming for a sustainable impact on the local community. This underscores their commitment to giving back to the community.
