Volleyball League to Return Next Year

The last BVF league was in 2018 Mascom, JB Sports the last corporates to come through for volleyball Role of BOTESSA emphasised BVF currently preparing for AUSC in Malawi in December SPORTS REPORTER Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) is working around the clock to secure sponsorships in order to ensure the return of the national volleyball league next year, The Business Weekly Sports has established. The BVF national league has not taken place for more than 37 months, the last league game having been played in the last quarter of 2018 under a Mascom Wireless sponsorship that was not renewed. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] Volleyball cup competitions are in the same situation of no one coming forward with sponsorship, JB Sports being the last entity to sponsor the tournaments. “We understand the importance of a national league as it is through the league that coaches develop their players,” said BVF president, Tsoseletso Magang, in an interview. “The league is played over a long period of time, and that gives coaches an opportunity to try out new players and playing formats. “That is why we are working around the clock to try and secure sponsors so that we can begin the league in the course of next year. For now, we cannot say if it will be run in the same way as in the past.” Relations with external stakeholders A former volleyball player herself with a telling nickname of Scud, Magang went on to emphasise the importance of strengthening relations with stakeholders like Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) and Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association (BOTESSA). “BISA is still out of activity because of the suspension of school sports but it is our hope that the issue will be resolved soon,” she said. “That is because we need school sports. We cannot develop sports without school sports as it is extremely costly. “We are yet to officially meet with BOTESSA but we have engaged and we are both looking forward to siting down to discuss a working relationship. “We have ambitions of developing volleyball at tertiary schools because that is where players at the peak of their careers. So we really do need them.” BOTESSA is the Botswana Tertiary Education School Sports Association that effectively functions as a feeder base for higher level sports across codes. National teams Magang told The Business Weekly Sports that the Federation is currently preparing a team for the AUSC Championships that will be held in Malawi in December. “We are hoping to secure financial support to strengthen the preparations,” she said. Formerly known as the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) Zone V Games, the AUSC Games take place on a biennial basis and target athletes under the age of 20 from sporting codes like volleyball football, athletics and netball. The AUSC Region 5 Games have become a key development component and springboard for athletes, several of whom have passed through them to international stardom. [/ihc-hide-content]
