What explains Botswana’s Barren Landscape of Sports Bereft of Sponsorship?

It is an axiomatic fact that sponsorship plays a critical role in the growth of sports. However, over the last several years, some sporting codes in Botswana have been finding it difficult to attract sponsorships or to at least maintain long lasting relationships with them once secured. This has resulted in a dearth of leagues and tournaments for the codes, hurting – and even stultifying - development and continuity of the game in the process. Sports reporters of The Business Weekly Sports look at the barren landscape of sports sans sponsorship to see what can be done to cultivate mutually enriching relationships between sports and capital in Botswana’s corporate world

Investigations carried out by The Business Weekly Sports show that more than 50 percent of national sporting associations (NSAs) do not have sponsors to run their leagues and tournaments. These include Botswana Boxing Association where the last time there was a sponsor for a tournament was more than eight ago, and Botswana Volleyball Federation whose national league has not taken place for more than 37 months, the last league game having been played in the last quarter of 2018 under a Mascom Wireless sponsorship that was not renewed.

Botswana Football League (BFL) went through the 2021/22 season without title sponsors and it is yet to be seen if they will have one or some for the next season. Botswana Karate Association does not have sponsors to run tournaments either.
