Absa Bank Botswana has launched a dedicated banking proposition for Batswana living and working abroad, positioning the diaspora as a potential source of investment and wealth creation rather than primarily a channel for remittances.
Speaking at the launch, Absa Bank Botswana Managing Director Keabetswe Pheko-Moshagane said the proposition is intended to make it easier for Batswana abroad to maintain financial connections with Botswana through banking, savings, investment and property financing solutions. She said the bank wants to broaden the traditional understanding of diaspora finance, which has largely centered on money sent home to families.
“Remittances remain important, but the opportunity is much bigger,” Pheko-Moshagane said.
The proposition is aimed at enabling Batswana abroad to participate more directly in the domestic economy, particularly as Botswana seeks to diversify economic activity, stimulate investment, grow the private sector and create employment.
Pheko-Moshagane said the question should move beyond how much money the diaspora sends to Botswana to how Batswana living abroad can participate in building the country’s future prosperity.
“We must move from remittances to investment; from transactions to wealth creation; and from simply sending money home to building assets at home,” she said.
The proposition includes access to banking, savings, investment and property financing, according to Pheko-Moshagane, who said Absa’s objective is to make the process of maintaining financial ties with Botswana easier and safer for customers living abroad.
The launch comes as Botswana seeks to mobilize more investment to support economic diversification and private-sector development.
Pheko-Moshagane said the diaspora should be considered part of that economic journey, with financial services potentially providing a bridge between income earned abroad and investment opportunities in Botswana.
She said the initiative was about more than introducing banking products, describing it as an effort to connect Batswana abroad with opportunities to build, invest and create assets at home.
“At Absa, we want to help you build, invest and prosper at home,” she said.
