There are acts of support that are felt immediately and there are those that take root quietly, grow steadily and outlast the people who planted them. On World Environment Day, Access Bank Botswana chose the latter.

On the 5th of June 2026, Access Bank celebrated World Environment Day under this year’s theme of Climate Action, backed by the global campaign #NowForClimate.

In commemoration of this year’s global observance, Access Bank staff, community members, and students joined hands to plant fruit trees across Ipeleng Primary School, Lobatse, Kabakae Kgotla, Ghanzi, Palapye Kgotla and Maun; an initiative aimed at community building, reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and community impact. This drive is expected to directly benefit approximately 4,000 lives across these communities.

Rooted in community engagement and sustainability, the initiative is a direct expression of Access Bank’s Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, anchored in the Bank’s three sustainability pillars: People, Planet and Profits; a framework that recognizes that long-term business success and environmental responsibility are inseparable.

“At Access Bank Botswana, we believe that doing more means more than banking. It means showing up for our communities, our environment, and future generations. Today’s initiative is a small but meaningful step in the Bank’s broader commitment to building a sustainable Botswana,” noted Lobatse Branch Manager Baratang Mosweu.

Trees play a critical role in combating climate change; absorbing carbon dioxide, supporting biodiversity, preventing soil erosion, and improving air quality. By planting in schools and kgotlas, Access Bank is embedding environmental education and stewardship at the heart of the communities it serves.

The effort aligns with the Access Bank Group’s broader sustainability agenda, which places environmental responsibility at the core of its continental operations. As one of Africa’s largest financial institutions, Access Bank Group has committed to measurable environmental impact targets across its marketsand Access Bank’s World Environment Day activities reflect that global commitment expressed locally.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Climate Action,” resonates deeply with Botswana’s own environmental landscape, where land degradation and water scarcity remain pressing national concerns. Access Bank Botswana’s tree drive directly responds to this call to action.

Sustainability is not measured in the size of a gesture; it is measured in its staying power. The trees planted today will clean the air, hold the soil, and shelter communities long after this moment has passed. True commitment to community does not end when the event does; it grows, season after season, in the places and among the people that make up our community.  In choosing to plant, the Bank is choosing to stay.
