French broadcaster Canal+ will discontinue the Showmax streaming service operated by its recently acquired subsidiary MultiChoice Group, marking a strategic retreat from one of Africa’s most ambitious attempts to build a homegrown streaming competitor to global platforms.
The decision follows a comprehensive review of the group’s streaming operations after Canal+ completed its takeover of MultiChoice in September 2025. Management said the move forms part of a broader effort to restore financial discipline and optimise investment across the enlarged media group.
