Over the next three weekends, DSTV will take their audience on an unforgettable cinematic journey, showcasing Botswana’s vibrant culture, traditions, and untold stories through three locally produced films airing on Mzansi Magic, Channel 161.
These films offer a glimpse into Botswana’s lifestyle, while propelling the nation’s unique voice onto the global stage.
First up is Mokwalo, airing on 16th November. A young girl discovers a secret diary that allows her to change life as she knows it to whatever she wants. She uses it to her will and learns a valuable lesson about having that much power. Mokwalo boasts an all-star cast including Loretta Mekgwe, Tefo Paya, Latoya Moji, Lilly Molapisi, Bernard Morapedi, and South African actress Clementine Mosimane. Alongside its remarkable cast, the film’s exceptional quality owes much to its producers Game ‘Zeus’ Bantsi, Masego Mohwasa and Lorato Orapeleng.
“I hope when everyone is done watching the film, they can reach out to their loved ones and appreciate them more while they are still here,” said Masego Mohwasa, producer, writer and director of Mokwalo.
On 23rd November, Buying the Cow brings a humorous yet heartfelt exploration of love and relationships. The film follows the intertwined lives of a couple as they navigate the complexities of modern love and ambition. Starring Talenta P Ollyn, Mpho Matshediso, Kabo Timela, Kgomotso Ramakoba and Thabang Tawana, with a talented production team led by Bongani Buzzman as the Producer, Mphonyana Princess Mokokwe as the Director, and Johnson Otlaadisa as the Supervising Producer, the film gives a fresh, comedic take on commitment and societal expectations. “It’s an honour to share “Buying the Cow”, a heartwarming tale of misunderstandings, love, resilience and the promise of forever. This film is our love letter to the wisdom of the past and the vibrant relationships of today, reflecting the ever-changing world we call home”, reflected Mphonyana Princess Mokokwe.
Finally, Khumo ya Dinaledi which airs on 30th November depicts the life of a college dropout who must rebuild his life after recklessly squandering his inheritance. The film explores themes of grief, loss and personal growth. The Lightworks Studios Production features actors Keorapetse Moeletsi, Kesego Otlaadisa, Kgomotso Haba and Pule Mmakgotso among others, under the creative and visionary leadership of directors Tumelo Chaba and Producer Bongani Buzzman. The brains behind the story, Tumelo Chaba, said that the film is about redemption, love and the influential role of family support in helping us find our way back. “It celebrates the bonds that shape and lift us and lead us toward second chances and self-discovery,” she shared.
Speaking at the film launch, DSTV Botswana’s Managing Director Stephanie Pillay shared her immense pride in the country’s creative achievements, reiterating her vision to build a platform which supports and shares more of Botswana’s stories. “We are thrilled to bring these incredible local films to our viewers. Our commitment to local content is unwavering and we believe these films will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages. By supporting local filmmakers, we are investing in the future of Botswana’s creative industry,” she said.
Pillay further highlighted that the films are not just an entertainment offering, but a powerful means of celebrating Botswana’s rich heritage, its dynamic people, and ensuring that the country’s story is shared with the rest of the world.
