BEMA supports ban on school uniform importation

In 2021, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry imposed restrictions on importation of school uniforms in a bid to promote local production and build competitiveness and sustainability of the local textile and clothing industry. While this was a welcome development for some, others were doubtful of the local textile sector’s capability to deliver quality products and meet local demand. BABOLOKI MEEKWANE of The Business Weekly & Review contacted the CEO of Botswana Exporters and Manufacturers Association, Mmantlha Sankoloba, about the sector’s ability and capacity.

Q: What are your thoughts on the restrictions imposed by the government on importation of some textile products, including school uniforms? Was it a good move?

A: It is no secret that as things currently stand, Botswana’s import bill is high and has been at peak levels for many years. There has been a public outcry to change the situation and therefore it is plausible to witness the government taking a bold step towards addressing these concerns.
