BERA Reports Massive Increase In Illicit Oil

• Regulator’s latest annual reports shows an exponential increase of illicit oil sold in Botswana over just one year 
• BERA report notes that paraffin was either adjusted by half the rate of recovery or not adjusted at all as govt’s pro-poor strategy 

An alarming increase in the amount of illicit oil sold in Botswana in the space of just one year has been recorded, The Business Weekly & Review has established.

In its 2022 annual report released recently, the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) notes: “During surveillance activities in the current financial year, the Authority collected and disposed 47,850 litres of illicit fuel indicating an alarming 88.5 percent increase from 25,390 litres recorded in the previous financial year.”
