The Bank of Botswana has lifted its restriction on commercial banks’ prime lending rates, betting that improved liquidity and cheaper funding will bring down borrowing costs without requiring banks to cut rates by order.
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously on Thursday to end the moratorium while keeping the benchmark Monetary Policy Rate at 5.5 percent. The Bank said it expected greater pricing flexibility to push prime rates down, but gave no indication of when or by how much rates might fall, or what action it would take if banks failed to reduce them.
