The April 2026 inflation of 10.3 percent marks the return of macroeconomic conditions last seen at their peak in August 2022, and economists now warn of a dangerous convergence between rising prices, weak growth and structural unemployment.
In January 2022, Botswana's annual inflation rate hit 10.6 percent, driven primarily by transport costs. Fuel price increases implemented on Dec. 20, 2021, combined with a P1.00 increase in public transport fares for both taxis and minibuses, had pushed prices to levels not seen since 2009.
