The Hidden Costs Behind Botswana’s Elevated Fuel Prices

Govt drags its feet on cushioning against fuel price hikes

GABORONE 8 November 2012, The motorist have to count 5othebe more per litter for the fuel for their vehicle from the early morning of the day on 9 November 2012 as the ministry of minerals, energy and water resources increases the prize based on the review of the fuel prices for the month of September when the fuel price gone up in global market. Motorists will continue paying up to 29 percent more for fuel than they did before the March global energy price shock, despite recent pump price reductions by the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA), as accumulated import cost recoveries, elevated logistics costs and a weaker Pula continue to keep prices well above pre-crisis levels.

International oil prices have retreated to near pre-shock levels, but the July adjustment by BERA only partially reversed the steep increases introduced in March. Petrol remains about 18 percent above its pre-crisis price, while diesel is still roughly 29 percent more expensive.
