Sefalana Group, a prominent name in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, is marking its 50th anniversary with an unprecedented promotional campaign launch. The company’s “Wanna Be a Millionaire?” Birthday Bonanza promises to be Botswana’s largest giveaway ever, offering prizes totaling P10 million.
Since its inception in 1974, Sefalana has been a cornerstone of Botswana’s retail landscape and evolved from humble beginnings to a household name renowned for innovation and excellence. Its golden jubilee marks a half-century of dedication to serving local communities, fostering local enterprise, and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
“This year we are looking to change the lives of a number of our customers, as a way of us saying “re a leboga or Thank you” for your loyalty over the years,” said Chandra Chauhan, Sefalana Group Managing Director.
Chauhan highlighted that the “Wanna Be a Millionaire?” Birthday Bonanza is poised to spark excitement throughout Botswana. Customers who spend over P150 on groceries, including three promotional items, will qualify for chances to win significant cash prizes. The top prize stands at an impressive P1 million, complemented by additional prizes of P500,000, ten prizes of P100,000 each, and 71 prizes of P50,000 each. Moreover, more than 1,800 smartphones will also be distributed as part of the promotion. In total, the prize pool amounts to a substantial P10 million.
Sefalana’s journey over the past five decades has been characterised by a commitment to local development. With over 7,000 employees across the Group, including 5,000 of whom are Batswana, Sefalana stands as one of the country’s largest private-sector employers.
“We are also very proud of our citizen-based employment practices with 99.4 percent of our staff in Botswana being citizens,” Chauhan noted.
The company also takes pride in supporting local suppliers and farmers, which contributes to the growth of downstream industries. Chauhan asserts that amid import restrictions on fruit and vegetables, Sefalana has played a crucial role in developing the local farming industry through initiatives like funding support and contract farming arrangements.
“We continue to be a corporate citizen and focus on developing our people,” he said.
Chauhan added that Sefalana is proud to be a true Botswana company, with over 93 percent of its shareholding in the hands of Batswana or Botswana-owned institutions. Its largest shareholder is the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOPF) followed by the Debswana Pension Fund.
“Our success is shared with the members of those pension funds. We therefore represent hundreds of thousands of Batswana,” he elaborated.
Chauhan expressed the Group’s excitement in celebrating this significant milestone with its customers and conveying gratitude for their steadfast support over the past five decades. He emphasised that the 50th-anniversary promotion is Sefalana’s gesture of giving back to the communities that have embraced and contributed to its growth into a formidable company.
“We look forward to creating memorable experiences and rewarding our customers for their loyalty. We would like to thank our suppliers for the support you have given us in developing and executing this promotion. We value your participation and encouragement,” he said.
To qualify for a chance to win, Sefalana customers must spend a minimum of P150 by purchasing three participating promotional items at any Sefalana store nationwide (excluding Quick Shops).Chand
