Botswana Fibre Networks (BOFINET) has announced the successful completion of the Kanye village fibre optic project, a significant step in enhancing ICT infrastructure and expanding broadband internet access across the country.
This initiative aims to provide high-capacity technology with speeds of up to 10Gbps to key areas including government institutions, businesses, and hospitality establishments.
The project was undertaken by the Ministry of Communications, Knowledge and Technology through Botswana Fibre Networks (BOFINET), working together with Teletechnics.
Minister Thulagano Segokgo highlighted the potential of this infrastructure to unlock vast opportunities for the local economy, enabling residents of Kanye and surrounding areas to engage more effectively in the global economy.
โThere are opportunities such as e-commerce, which allows a businessperson in Kanye to sellย his or her goods and services to a global market through the use of technological advances such as online stores and digital transfer of payments,โ he said.
Segokgo emphasised the importance of learning to utilise this technology to maximise its benefits.
BOFINET Governing Body Deputy Chairperson Mothusi Tladi reiterated their commitment to citizen economic empowerment, noting that the project engaged 53 people, 52 of whom were Batswana.
The project, which spans three fibre loops over 80.5 kilometres, was completed in 11 months at a cost of P17.8 million.
In celebration of this milestone, BOFINET, in collaboration with Teletechnics, has donated 15 computers to Makaba II Primary School as part of their Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative.
