Leading Botswana’s road maintenance revolution with infrared technology
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kagiso Kwelagobe is a pioneering entrepreneur and the visionary owner of Botswana’s first infrared pothole repair company. His journey has been marked by perseverance and an unwavering resolve to introduce and establish cutting-edge technology in the country’s road maintenance sector. Recognising the urgent need for efficient and sustainable road repairs, Kwelagobe sought out infrared technology—a method that not only provides durable solutions but also reduces environmental impact.

“Despite the challenges of introducing new technology in a market accustomed to traditional methods, my dedication never wavered,” Kwelagobe said. He worked tirelessly to demonstrate the benefits of infrared repair, gradually earning the trust of both clients and stakeholders.

Kwelagobe’s commitment to innovation and his passion for improving Botswana’s infrastructure has made him a trailblazer in the industry. His efforts have not only set a new standard for road maintenance but have also underscored the importance of embracing technological advancements in the pursuit of progress.

Pro-Phalt’s innovative technology has supported the utility sector for several years, providing fast, effective, and reliable solutions for repairing sunken utility tracks, consequential damage, and scarring, according to Kwelagobe. He acknowledged that typical failures highlighted by local authorities within the first 12-month guarantee period include compaction failure, air voids, edge depression, or joint failure. However, Kwelagobe emphasised that the infrared joint technology creates a seamless joint, preventing future water ingress and resulting in longer-lasting, safer repairs.

In addition, Kwelagobe noted that with no need for saw cutting or jackhammering, dust and waste are eliminated, and noise impact is significantly reduced. The process also delivers numerous efficiencies by reducing downtime, disruption, and safety risks, which helps avoid fines and health and safety concerns. Typical repairs, Kwelagobe explained, take only 10 minutes to complete, ensuring customer confidence and improving the perception of utility reinstatements in line with the SA Agreement Board.

Pro-Phalt Botswana is a wholly citizen-owned and accredited provider of Infrared Pothole Repair Technology (IPRT). The company’s founding stems from a deep desire to strengthen and focus on the road maintenance and repair sector. Pro-Phalt’s strength comes from its vision of continuously embracing new technologies to drive innovation and transformation in the global economy. Kwelagobe aims to pioneer the transformation of road and pothole repair methods in Botswana.
