  • Mongwa’s placement recognises her outstanding business acumen and significant contributions to Botswana’s healthcare sector

In a remarkable feat of entrepreneurial excellence, the Founder and Director of Kalafhi Medical Centre, Matlhogonolo Mongwa, has emerged as one of Africa’s brightest business stars and secured a coveted spot among the Top 50 Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) 2023 cohort.

ABH is the flagship philanthropic programme of the Jack Ma Foundation’s in Africa and seeks to identify, celebrate and support exemplary entrepreneurs across the continent. Mongwa is a practising medical doctor by profession and leads Kalafhi Medical Centre, which is a 100 percent citizen-owned establishment with four multidisciplinary medical centres in and around Gaborone that have general practitioners, pharmacies, dentists, physiotherapy, medical aesthetics, and specialists.

Exceptional patient care

Kalafhi Medical Centre is a leading healthcare provider in Botswana that is dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care and driving innovation in the healthcare sector.

Mongwa founded the centre to improve the accessibility, affordability and quality of healthcare services in Botswana with Kalafhi Medical Centre’s commitment to innovation, cutting-edge technology, and patient-centred care solidifying its position as a frontrunner in the healthcare industry in Botswana.

Her selection means she will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other exceptional business leaders from the Top 50 ABH list selected among 27 267 applicants from 54 African countries in diverse sectors, all of whom have demonstrated their ability to create innovative solutions, generate employment opportunities and uplift local economies.

Visionary leadership

In a recent public statement, Kalafhi Medical Centre noted that Mongwa’s inclusion in the prestigious Top 50 recognises her outstanding entrepreneurial journey and highlights the significant contributions that she has made to the healthcare industry in Botswana.

“Under Dr. Mongwa’s visionary leadership, Kalafhi Medical Centre has revolutionised the healthcare landscape in Botswana,” the statement noted. “From pioneering the integration of robotics in medical procedures to championing early disease detection and treatment methods, and introducing innovative medical financing models, her audacious vision has propelled the centre to the forefront of healthcare innovation.”

Like-minded African business leaders

As an ABH Top 50 finalist, Mongwa will now have exclusive access to training, mentoring, and learning programmes and join a community of like-minded African business leaders.

She will also have the opportunity to showcase her entrepreneurial journey at the Africa Business Heroes Summit where the final 10 winners will be selected and compete for their share of USD 1.5 million (P20 million) in grant funding. Botswana’s past entrants in the competition include Mavis Nduchwa of Kalahari Honey in 2020, and Ketshephaone Jacob of the Bulb World, who made the Top 10 of the 2021 cohort. Others are Tendekayi Katsiga and Mellisa Tafila who progressed to the Top 20 of the 2022 cohort.
