Rail revenue reaches P60.5 million

Volume of railed goods up 12.7% in Q3 2025 The volume and value of goods transported by rail increased in the third quarter of 2025, reaching 242,067 tonnes and generating P60.5 million in revenue, Statistics Botswana said in its latest Transport and Infrastructure Brief. The figures represent a 12.7 percent increase from the 214,854 net tonnes transported in the previous quarter, while revenue rose by 13.8 percent from P53.2 million. Statistics Botswana said imports accounted for the largest share of goods transported during the quarter at 33.3 percent. Exports followed at 28.4 percent, slightly ahead of local traffic goods at 27.1 percent, while transit traffic accounted for 11.1 percent of the total. The volume of goods transported was highest in August, which accounted for 38.1 percent of the total. July contributed 32.4 percent, while September accounted for the remaining 29.5 percent. “Revenue generated from the goods transported this quarter increased by 13.8 percent, from P53.2 million generated in the previous quarter to P60.5 million,” Statistics Botswana said. The largest share of revenue was generated from the movement of local traffic goods, accounting for 29.2 percent. Revenue from exports made up 28.8 percent of the total, while imports contributed 27.9 percent. The growth comes as Botswana Railways (BR) has unveiled plans to overhaul its operations after revealing that only 12 percent of its wagon fleet is operational and just 26 percent of its locomotives are in service. In a recent stakeholder update, the rail utility said freight tonnage stood at 521,000 tonnes against a target of 935,000 tonnes, while operational costs continue to exceed income, resulting in persistent monthly deficits. Executives said BR is also struggling with an increasingly aged creditor book, which is affecting cash flows. President Advocate Duma Boko has outlined plans to transform the local rail network, saying Botswana, as a transit country, is positioned to play an important role in facilitating intra-Africa trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA), with rail transport at the forefront. Boko has identified Botswana Railways as one of the parastatals to be turned into a profit-making entity following years of losses. Meanwhile, Statistics Botswana said aircraft movements in the third quarter of 2025 increased by 10.7 percent to 26,453 from 23,903 in the previous quarter. Domestic aircraft movements rose by 12.1 percent, while international movements increased by 5.0 percent. Air passenger movements during the quarter totaled 273,560, an 11.9 percent increase from 244,424 recorded in the second quarter of 2025. Most aircraft movements were non-scheduled, accounting for 74.5 percent of the total, with 84.7 percent of those being domestic. Scheduled movements made up 16.7 percent, with 68.9 percent classified as international. Scheduled arrivals and departures accounted for 34.6 percent and 34.3 percent of total international movements, respectively. Maun Airport recorded the highest number of aircraft movements at 71.5 percent of the total, followed by Kasane Airport at 15.8 percent. Selebi-Phikwe and Ghanzi airports recorded the lowest number of movements, at 0.1 percent each.
