Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) is grappling with the sudden withdrawal of Botswanaโ€™s hosting rights for the 2025 Region 5 Karate Championships by the Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK) Southern Region.ย

The decision, made without warning, has left BOKAโ€™s leadership both disheartened and confused, as Botswana had been prepared to host the prestigious event.

In a letter dated September 30, 2024, BOKA President Mpho Bakwadi expressed disappointment, stating that Botswana was ready to host but had been waiting for clarification from Region 5 on the areas where assistance would be provided. The lack of response, Bakwadi argues, became the primary hurdle to finalising preparations. Despite Botswanaโ€™s readiness, the country has now been stripped of the opportunity to host, without a clear justification.

โ€œWe believe this decision is unfair,โ€ Bakwadi wrote to UFAK Southern Region President Joe Rugwete. He emphasised that Botswana had been gearing up for the event, which would have elevated the nationโ€™s stature in regional karate and showcased its ability to host large-scale sporting events.

Missed Opportunity for Botswana

BOKA had seen the tournament as more than just a competitive event; it was an opportunity to position Botswana as a key player in Southern Africaโ€™s sporting landscape. Hosting the tournament would have increased Botswanaโ€™s profile internationally and helped develop karate at home, especially for younger athletes.

The event also promised economic benefits, including an influx of visitorsโ€”athletes, officials, and fansโ€”from across Southern Africa, which would have boosted the local economy. Hotels, restaurants, and local businesses stood to gain significantly.

Development of Karate and Youth Sports

Bakwadi highlighted that hosting the tournament would have inspired the next generation of karate athletes in Botswana, providing them the opportunity to compete at an elite level on home soil. The exposure and experience gained would have been critical for skill development.

Cultural Exchange and Regional Unity

Beyond sport and economic benefits, the Region 5 Championships are a platform for cultural exchange and regional integration. The event brings together countries across Southern Africa, fostering relationships and collaboration. Bakwadi emphasised the importance of such exchanges in strengthening unity within the region.

Sponsorship and Long-Term Partnerships

Hosting the championships would have also attracted corporate sponsorship and forged long-term partnerships for both karate and broader sports development in Botswana. Such opportunities could have translated into greater support for local athletes and future tournaments.

However, with the sudden withdrawal of hosting rights, Botswanaโ€™s athletes, particularly the youth, have lost a chance to compete at the highest level in familiar surroundingsโ€”a major setback for the country’s sporting aspirations.
