Botswana athletes to train in USA

The athletes include the country’s 100m sprinter, Letsile Tebogo as well as the trio that made part of the 4x400m relay team that won Botswana a bronze medal (4x400m) during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. These are Zibani Ngozi, Bayapo Ndori and Leungo Scotch. Nike has sponsored the camp and has paid for everything from flight tickets to accommodation, said Coach Mosimanyane in a telephone interview. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="3" ] Mosimanyane who was named coach of the year (2022) by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) also told this publication that he expects the Los Angeles training camp to work in favor of his athletes. “That is because facilities there are much advanced. Tracks there are of high quality and their gym rooms always have the needed equipment,” he said. “Yet again, change of environment can sometimes work in favor of the athletes and in this sense, I expect it to do so.” Additionally, Mosimanyane noted that he expects the training to play a huge role in readying Tebogo for this year’s World Championships. “I mean as of now he is the only athlete that has qualified (100m) for the Championships (individually),” he said. “As for the other trio, I hope the camp will go a long way in helping them qualify for individual races and solidify their places in the men’s 4x400m relay team. The World Championships are our focus for the year.” Otherwise known as Dose, Mosimanyane said the athletes will be in Los Angeles until the begging of April when they will return to compete in some races in South Africa and Botswana. The 2023 World Championships on the other hand will be held from the 19 th until the 27 th of August in Budapest which is Hungary’s capital and is bisected by the river Danub. Budapest is also a global city with strengths in commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment Meanwhile, Tebogo who is (as of now) the only athlete to have qualified for the 2023 World Athletics Championships is arguably the best 100m to ever come from Botswana. He smashed his own Under-20 100m record three times last year. The Kanye born athlete lowered his record to 9.91 on his way to winning gold at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships which were held in Cali, Colombia in August 2022. Tebogo had improved the U20 world record to 9.94 in the heats of the Senior World Championships which were staged in Eugene (USA) in July 2022, after he had set the mark at 9.96 on 30 April 2022 at the Gaborone International Meet. The 19-year-old athlete rose to stardom at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, after he became the first athlete from Botswana to win gold in the 100m on a global stage. He also picked up a silver in the 200m. It is yet to seen if he will continue shining and ultimately win the country’s medal in 100m or 200m at the Olympics and take over the reins from athletes like Isaac Makwala and Nigel Amos.
