Boxers Finally Receive their Prize Money from 2022 African Championships

Kenosi tops the list with P134K for her gold medal IBA comes to BoBA’s rescue by funding World Champs trip BoBA to send team to IBA 2023 Women’s World Champs in Delhi After anxiously waiting for five months, Botswana’s national team boxers who won medals or finished in the top three at the Africa Boxing Championships in Maputo, Mozambique in September last year have finally received their prize monies from Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC), The Business Weekly Sports can reveal. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="3" ] According to the International Boxing Association (IBA) website, gold medallists of the AFBC are entitled USD 10 000, silver medallists USD 5 000, while bronze medallists in all of the weight categories are entitled to USD 2 500. This means gold medallist Keamogetse Kenosi has finally received the USD 10 000 due to her, which translates into P134 000 while Aratwa Kasemang and George Molwantwa have received USD 5 000 each, which is about P67 000 each. Kobamelo Molatlhegi, Lethabo Modukanele and Phekie Bele revieved USD 2 500, which is about P33 000 each. “We believe that this is great motivation for our boxers as they can finally see that there is something for them in the sport,” said the Secretary General of Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA), Taolo Tlouetsile, in a telephone interview. “They can always look ahead to such competitions because they can see that there is something positive in them for them. “We are grateful to IBA for introducing prize monies, which we believe will makes life easier for us as it addresses a part of boxers’ welfare where are short.” Meanwhile, BoBA will send a team of three boxers to the IBA 2023 Women’s World Championships after IBA agreed to cover most of the costs of the trip. The team is made up of boxers Kasemang, Modukanele and Bele as well as coaches Thebe Setlalekgosi and Gibson Rauwe to guide the boxers at championships that will be held in New Delhi, India from 15 to 26 March. “Kenosi is not on the team because she did not pass the fitness test probably because she did not report to a training camp that we held earlier this year,” Tlouestsile said. “We did not have any funds for the trip but IBA came to our rescue by agreeing to fund a large part of it. “The Botswana National Olympic Committee has agreed to cover things like VISAs and boxer’s allowances. We are yet to meet with the Botswana National Sports Commission to see how best they can help.” [/ihc-hide-content]
