The Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) has hailed a shot in the arm by the Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) ahead of the upcoming Zone VI Region Senior Clubs Championships.

BVF said the P250,000 sponsorship highlights ODCโ€™s commitment to supporting sports development in Botswana, fostering community engagement, and empowering youth.

The tournament began on 5 December 2024 and is expected to run until 15 December 2024 at Ditshupo Hall in Gaborone, bringing together top volleyball teams from across Southern Africa. The sponsorship plays a crucial role in ensuring the success of this prestigious regional event, which will showcase Botswanaโ€™s volleyball talent and organisational capabilities.

BVF spokesperson Robin Seleka expressed heartfelt gratitude to ODC, acknowledging the partnership as a key milestone in Botswanaโ€™s sporting journey.

โ€œWe extend our deepest appreciation to ODC for stepping up as a partner. This sponsorship demonstrates their commitment to empowering communities and elevating sports in the country. ODC sets an excellent example of how the private sector can play a vital role in promoting the growth of sports,โ€ Seleka said.

Seleka explained that the ODC sponsorship is vital for the smooth execution of the championships, particularly in logistical aspects such as team travel, accommodation, and equipment.

โ€œThis sponsorship is more than just fundingโ€”itโ€™s a lifeline that enables us to bring this event to life. Hosting a tournament of this scale requires significant resources, and ODC has ensured that we can deliver a world-class experience for athletes, fans, and stakeholders,โ€ Seleka added.

The funds will also help prepare Botswanaโ€™s teams for top-level competition. โ€œThanks to ODCโ€™s support, our teams can focus on their performance, knowing that the necessary preparations are in place,โ€ Seleka continued.

The Zone VI Championships are expected to attract large crowds and foster unity through a shared love of sport. Seleka urged Batswana to attend the games and show their support for local teams.

โ€œThis tournament is about more than just competitionโ€”itโ€™s about bringing people together. We urge Batswana to come out in large numbers to Ditshupo Hall and cheer for their local teams. The players need your support and energy to inspire them to perform at their best,โ€ Seleka said.

He confirmed that the event commenced with a technical meeting on 5 December, followed by the opening ceremony and matches on 6 December. Games will start daily at 9 a.m., featuring exciting matchups between the region’s top teams.

Seleka emphasised that ODCโ€™s partnership is a landmark moment for both the BVF and volleyball in Botswana.

โ€œWe are incredibly proud to partner with ODC, a company that understands the transformative power of sports. Their contribution goes beyond financial supportโ€”itโ€™s an investment in the dreams and aspirations of young athletes who will one day represent Botswana on even bigger stages,โ€ Seleka said.

He noted that the sponsorship reflects ODCโ€™s broader commitment to nurturing talent and empowering youth.

โ€œODCโ€™s support is not just corporate responsibility; itโ€™s a testament to their belief in Botswanaโ€™s youth. They are helping us build a legacy of sports excellence that will last far beyond this tournament,โ€ Seleka added.

Seleka also encouraged other private-sector organisations to follow ODCโ€™s example by investing in sports and community development.

โ€œODC has set the standard for corporate involvement in sports. I urge other companies to follow suit and join us in making a difference. Investing in sports is not just about fundingโ€”itโ€™s about creating opportunities for young people, inspiring communities, and strengthening the nation,โ€ Seleka said.

He highlighted the wide-reaching benefits of corporate sponsorship, including boosting athletesโ€™ performance, promoting tourism, and driving event-related economic activity.

The Zone VI Championships feature 32 teamsโ€”16 menโ€™s and 16 womenโ€™sโ€”from seven countries. Botswanaโ€™s menโ€™s teams include Spiking Stars, Kalavango, Yaros, BDF VI, Police VI, Mag Stimela, and Prisons VI. The womenโ€™s teams include Spiking Stars, BDF VI, Police VI, Mafolofolo, and Kutlwano.

Other competing teams include Zimbabweโ€™s Black Mambas, Black Rhinos, and UZ Wolves; Mozambiqueโ€™s Allianca and Academica; Eswatiniโ€™s Royal Eswatini Police and Scorpions; Zambiaโ€™s Green Buffaloes, UNZA, and Nkwazi; Lesothoโ€™s Redskins and LMPS; and South Africaโ€™s VUT.

The BVF is working tirelessly to ensure the tournamentโ€™s success. Seleka expressed optimism that the event will inspire the next generation of volleyball players while demonstrating Botswanaโ€™s ability to host major regional competitions.

โ€œThis is more than just a tournamentโ€”itโ€™s a celebration of talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship. We are confident that this event will leave a lasting impact, not only on the athletes and fans but also on the development of volleyball in Botswana,โ€ Seleka said.

The tournament promises thrilling matches, cultural exchange, and unforgettable moments. With ODCโ€™s support and participation from top teams across the region, the Zone VI Championships are set to be a landmark event in Botswanaโ€™s sporting calendar.

As the tournament progresses, the BVF encourages volleyball fans to visit Ditshupo Hall and support the teams. With passionate fans and generous partners like ODC, Botswana is ready to shine on the regional sports stage.

โ€œLet us come together to support our teams and make this tournament a success. Botswana volleyball needs your love and encouragement,โ€ Seleka concluded.ย
