GU aims for glory this season

For the 2022/23 season, Botswana Football League (BFL) outfit Gaborone United (GU) is aiming for nothing but success in all competitions, The Business Weekly Sports has learnt. The “Money Machine,” as Gaborone United is otherwise known, was clearly the team to beat in local football last season. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="1" ] This is the team that was crowned the 2021/22 BFL Champions after finishing the league with 72 points after 13 years in the doldrums. The ‘Money Machine’ also won the Orange FA Cup, meaning that the team took two of three available cups in local football last season. The Old Naledi-based outfit is now aiming to win all cups available in local football this season. “We want to win every cup available this season and thereafter conquer Africa,” said GU Brand and Marketing Manager Herbert Letsebe on the sidelines of GU Open Day that was held in Gaborone recently. “We are the team to beat this season because we won two out of three cups last season. So, we will do all in our power to defend those cups and win more. That is the main reason we have bolstered our squad with quality players like Mothusi Cooper.” Asked if bolstering the squad will not hurt the team’s balance sheet, given the fact that football is not much profitable in Botswana, Letsebe answered: “It is our ambition to propel this team to great heights. “And if we want to be the biggest team in Botswana as well as in Africa at large, we do not have to worry about money. At any rate, these players that we signed are going to bring in money in the end. So, we have no need to worry.” GU head coach Benny Kgomela also believes his team will rule over the roost again. “We have had very robust pre-season training and played a number of matches that we won,” he told The Business Weekly Sports . “And these players have proved that they are physically and mentally ready for the season. So, we are ready to compete and defend our cups and take on African teams in continental competitions.” In addition to Cooper, GU has also added Onkabetse Makgantai, Thero Setsile and Lebogang Ditsele to reinforce the squad. “It is essential for coaches and teams to make players understand their roles,” Kgomela said in response to a question. “They have to be made aware that they are not stars, and that is something that we are doing in our team. No player is treated as a star and all of them are treated equally. We have to maintain that if we want to win games.” This is the coach who believes Townships Rollers, Jwaneng Galaxy and Security Systems are going to be GU’s greatest rivals this season. “They have all signed quality players and, according to our assessment, they have also had a great pre-season,” he said. “But we cannot rule out teams like Extension Gunners as they have proved to us (during pre-season matches) that they are here to compete this season.” GU will meet BDF XI in Lobatse tomorrow for its first league encounter. Meanwhile, GU is a BFL club that has proven over four decades since its establishment in 1967 that it is one of Botswana’s major soccer clubs. It has won the Botswana Premier League and tasted glory in all the major cups and tournaments available in the domestic domain in the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.
