RADO still awaits conclusion of Amos’ doping matter

SPORTS REPORTER The Africa Zone VI Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (RADO) is still waiting for Botswana’s 800m sensation Nijel Amos’s doping case to be concluded, The Business Weekly Sports has established. Amos was provisionally suspended on July 13 2022 from partaking in any athletics event by Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after a sample collected from him tested positive for metabolites of GW1516. Two months after the suspension, RADO which is a regional organisation designated by the country and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to coordinate and manage delegated areas of anti-doping programmes, is yet to receive Amos’s doping judgment. [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type="show" ihc_mb_who="1,2,3,4" ihc_mb_template="3" ] “One must understand that this issue is being handled by others,” said RADO Manager, Andrew Kamanga, in a telephone interview. Kamanga said the AIU has its own way of handling doping cases. “And in that way they will be constantly liaising with the athlete to conclude the case,” he said. “It is between them, and one can rest assured that they will follow the rules and regulations. They are experts in the business and whatever they do they will always ensure that the athlete’s confidentiality is protected.” Kamanga added that even if the case is yet to be solved after two months, it is not being dragged. “It’s not even five months after news broke that Amos had tested positive,” he said. “So we cannot say the case is being dragged. Rules and regulations have to be followed. Once everything is concluded, the AIU will communicate with us before the whole world can know of the judgment.” Reached for comment, the Vice President Administration at Botswana Athletics Association (BAA), Oabona Theetso, said they do not have details on the case. “The AIU is communicating directly with Amos,” he said. “We believe that once everything is finalized, we will have all the details and be in a position to fully comment on the matter.” Meanwhile, GW1516 (for which Amos has been provisionally suspended for testing positive for) is a substance prohibited under the 2022 WADA Prohibited List as a metabolic modulator. “Substances in this category modify how the body metabolises fat and GW1516 was originally synthesised and evaluated for the treatment of obesity, diabetes and other disorders caused by metabolic problems,” said the AIU in a statement released earlier this year when suspending Amos. The AIU at the time noted that GW1516 is not an approved substance for human use and that WADA has advised of its health risks for athletes. “GW1516 is a non-specified substance on the 2022 WADA Prohibited List and a provisional suspension is mandatory following an adverse analytical finding for such substance under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules,” read the AIU statement at the time. “Amos’ sample was collected during an out-of-competition test on the 4 th June 2022. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory that analysed the sample notified the AIU of the adverse analytical finding and the athlete was notified of the adverse analytical finding and his mandatory provisional suspension.” [/ihc-hide-content]
