Documentation and other formalities delay athlete’s departure Tebogo may not leave until March next year Will now do his pre-season training in Maun SPORTS REPORTER Botswana’s fastest man in the 100m race Letsile Tebogo’s move to the United States has been shelved for now, Business Weekly and Review Sports has established. Tebogo told journalists in a press conference of the World Junior Championships Cali22 earlier this year that he was planning to move to the US for studies. "I've been to the USA a couple of times and the best school by far is the University of Oregon … by the middle of September I'll be there." But things have changed for the young athlete who has been stunning athletes and spectators alike around the world with performances that compel comparisons with the world’s fastest man ever, Usain Bolt of Jamaica. Tebogo will not be moving to the US this year but will instead continue to train in Botswana. “We were not able to complete the documentation for him to move this month (for the September semester), the athlete’s mother, Seratiwa Tebogo, said in an interview. “The good thing is that the scholarship offer does not have a timeframe.” She added that depending on all documentation and other obligations being concluded before then, her son should be able to move to the US in March nest year. “It is not a sure thing at the moment,” she said. “The point is that we have many offers that we are exploring. In the meantime, my son will do his pre-season and general training in Maun, as has been the case before.” The athlete’s personal coach, Kebonyemodisa Mosimanyane, has confirmed that Tebogo will move to Maun in the last week of this month to begin his pre-season training in October. “Maun is our training base where we usually do our pre-season training,” he said in a telephone interview. “There are things in Maun that we need to intensify our training that are not here in Gaborone.” Focus is another compelling reason for preferring the world-famous resort town for training. “Tebogo does not have many friends there and is more focused training there,” Mosimanyane said. “I also find it easier to monitor everything around him in Maun, including his diet, because we are both more focused in an environment that is more like a training camp.” Tebogo is arguably Botswana’s best 100m athlete ever. He smashed his own Under 20 100m record three times this year. But the Kanye-born lad lowered his record to 9.91 on his way to winning gold at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia in August. Tebogo had improved the U20 world record to 9.94 in the heats of the senior World Championships in Eugene (USA) in July after setting the mark at 9.96 on 30 April at the Gaborone International Meet. The 19-year old athlete rose to stardom at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya after he became the first athlete from Botswana to win gold in the 100m on a global stage where he also picked up a silver in the 200m. His sights – and those of his nation – are trained on winning Olympic medals in the 100m or the 200m races. [/ihc-hide-content]
