From Nairobi with honours, GA’s award proves Botswana isn’t playing games when it comes to regulation, impact, and player protection.
The Botswana Gambling Authority has been honoured with the Continental Commitment & Impact Award at the Gaming Tech Africa Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya this week.
The award recognises institutions across Africa driving responsible gambling, regulatory innovation, and measurable social impact.
Summit organisers cited GA’s work on player protection frameworks, anti-money laundering enforcement, and its public education campaigns that shifted gambling conversations from stigma to safety.
Speaking at the awards dinner, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Moruntshi Kemorwale said: “This isn’t just a trophy for our office. It’s recognition of every Motswana who chose to gamble responsibly, every operator who complied when it was hard, and every parent who had tough conversations about odds vs outcomes. The award says Botswana is no longer following best practice — we’re setting it.”
He further told delegates: “Commitment without impact is just talk. In Botswana we’ve moved from warning posters to real interventions. From blocking illegal sites to funding counselling. That’s the impact this award is celebrating.”
What it means for Botswana
1. Global credibility: International operators now see Botswana as a “gold standard” market. That means more licensed operators will want to set up here, bringing tax revenue and jobs, but under strict GA oversight.
Policy influence: GA will likely be invited to shape regional regulations through the African Gaming Regulators Forum. Botswana’s model on harm-minimisation could become the template for other countries.
Public trust: For citizens, the award validates that regulation isn’t just about licences and fines. It’s about protecting families.
Economic signal: Investors watch these awards. A “Continental Commitment” win tells fintech, telcos, and sports sponsors that Botswana’s gaming sector is stable, transparent, and growing responsibly.Kemorwale accepted the award in Nairobi and dedicated it to Batswana: “This belongs to you. Every time you choose to bet responsibly, you make this possible.”
