Botswana’s gambling industry is well on its way to generating more than P450 million in annual Gross Gambling Revenue (GGR).
This was highlighted by the CEO of Gambling Authority Botswana, Emolemo Peter Kesitilwe, during the store launch of Bet267 in Mogoditshane recently
In March 2025 alone, the total value of wagers and bets by Botswana players was P150 million, with payouts totaling P135 million, resulting in P15 million in Gross Gambling Revenue (GGR) that month.
The figure is however representative of only 40 percent of the country’s estimated 550,000 gamblers, presenting an opportunity for the remaining 60 percent who are using unregulated gambling platforms.
By converting these unlicensed players to regulated platforms, Kesitilwe added that the industry could easily surpass P450 million in annual revenue, presenting a substantial opportunity for economic growth. This would also create jobs and bolster the national economy, as licensed operators like Bet267 have already demonstrated with plans to employ 109 people across various locations.
To further support the sector’s growth, the Gambling Authority is amending the Gambling Act of 2012 to address key issues such as Anti-money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism Compliance and to revise the legal gambling age from 21 to 18.
“This change will allow companies like Bet267 to legally enroll more customers who would otherwise migrate to unregulated platforms,” he said, highlighting that the changes will make the sector more secure and attractive for both local and international players.
He also encouraged operators such as Bet267 to embed Anti-Money Laundering measures in their operations, especially given the rise of anonymous digital payments and international player access.
Comparing Botswana to neighbouring countries, Kesitilwe noted the potential for growth in the local gambling market. “For context, South Africa’s regulated gambling industry, particularly in the betting sector, is significantly more mature and expansive. South Africa’s betting population is estimated at over 6 million, with an annual GGR exceeding R40 billion (approximately P30 billion). This highlights the vast economic potential of a well-regulated and adequately enforced gambling sector.”
He highlighted that although Botswana’s market is smaller, its per capita betting activity is among the highest in the region. “With the right policy framework, compliance culture, and public education, we can grow our sector responsibly.”
He praised Bet267 for making commendable strides in job creation and empowerment, with eight licensed employees currently. Nationally, the company is expected to create over 109 jobs, including strategic partnerships with Batswana in Letlhakane, Palapye and Gaborone.
